MONASTERIES IN LADAKH

Hemis Monastery:

Stagchen Raschegn constructed this monastery during 17th century.  It is also famous for annual ‘Hemis’ festival where you can relish scare mask dance that shows win of good over evil. It also has great collection of frightened thangkas.

Diskit monastery:

Diskit monastery is another well-known monastery for its brainy murals.  Founded in 14th century by ‘Changzem Tsera Zangpo’ this monastery appeals the visitors with its silent atmosphere and amazing architecture designs.

Thiksey monastery:

Thiksey monastery was created in the respect of the Dalai Lama. It is settled at 9 miles away from Leh and enriched with range of buddhist art such as statues, wall paintings and thankas.

Likir monastery:

It was founded in 14th century by ‘Lama Dhwang’, it is said that this the first monastery created by Tibetan monks. Here you can visit the museum to explore a collection of Tibetan artifacts.

In addition to these monasteries one also must visit some more monasteries like Sankar Gompa, Shey Gompa, Matho Gompa and Alchi monastery placed in Ladakh.
